FOSTERING FAQs
Why is fostering important?
Fostering provides a safe, loving environment for animals, freeing up shelter space and helping them adjust to home life, increasing their chances of successful adoption.
How long does fostering usually last?
The length of a foster commitment varies, ranging from a few weeks to several months, depending on the animal's needs and how quickly they are adopted.
What do I need to provide as a foster parent?
A safe, nurturing environment, basic care (food, water, exercise), transportation to vet appointments if needed, and lots of love and attention. We will provide you with a martingale collar for all dogs, but ask that you bring a leash when you pick up your pup. If supplies are a roadblock to fostering, pls reach out to us as we do often get donations and pass them along to our fosters.
Do I have to pay for medical care while fostering?
No, medical care is provided for animals within the Pupstarz Foster program. Foster caregivers must use a PupStarz Rescue-approved veterinarian for all medical care. Unauthorized vet visits will not be reimbursed. If your foster animal requires medical attention, contact PupStarz Rescue immediately to arrange an appointment. Any prescribed medications must be picked up promptly at a designated location.
Do I need experience to foster?
No experience is necessary! We provide resources and support to help you care for your foster animal. Passion for animals and a willingness to learn are the most important requirements.
Can I foster if I have other pets?
Yes, but it’s important to ensure your pets are up-to-date on vaccinations and can adjust to a new animal. Proper introductions and supervision are crucial.
What if the foster animal has behavioral or medical issues?
Pupstarz Rescue will work closely with you to address these challenges, providing veterinary care and training resources as needed.
Can I choose the type of animal I foster?
Yes, we do our best to match foster animals with your preferences, lifestyle, and experience.
What happens if I can no longer foster?
Life happens, and we understand. Please inform the rescue as soon as possible so we can make alternative arrangements for the animal. If you have scheduled travel, we ask that you give us as much notice as possible so that we can find a temporary foster while you are away.
Will I be involved in the adoption process?
Absolutely! Fosters are vital in helping potential adopters learn about the animal’s personality, preferences, and needs. Sharing photos, videos, and tagging us on social media also helps spread the word and increases the chances of your foster pet finding their forever home. Our adoptions team handles application reviews and home checks to ensure the best match for each pet before arranging a meet and greet.
Can I foster if I work full-time?
Yes, fostering can work with many different lifestyles. Some animals may require more time and attention, so we’ll match you with an animal that fits your schedule.
How does fostering benefit me?
Fostering is incredibly rewarding! You’ll have the chance to make a difference in an animal’s life, enjoy companionship, and gain a deeper understanding of animal care.
Can families with children foster?
Yes, fostering can be a wonderful experience for families. We’ll help match you with an animal that fits your household dynamics.
Are the age requirements for fostering?
You must be 21 years old to foster.
Who do I contact if I have questions during fostering?
Our foster coordinator will be your main point of contact for any questions, concerns, or emergencies. You will also be assigned a foster mentor upon picking up your foster animals. We’re here to support you every step of the way!
